The Standing Stone Sculpture

During October 2010 Ian & the gardening team planned, built the foundations, and installed a beautiful new focal point for visitors to enjoy upon entry to the gardens. The granite standing stone artwork and inscription were designed by Richard Kindersley, world renowned for his architectural lettering and inscriptions.

The standing stone weighed half a ton so the foundations were key to a successful install. A hole was dug to a depth of 1m and then back filled with cement leaving a precise slot in the top for the stone to be dropped into. See Carl and Luke below tunneling towards Austraila!

The delivery day arrived and surprisingly the 2.8m & half a ton stone was delivered by Richard and two of his studio workers within a Vauxhall Astra estate!

Once the stone was unloaded from the vehicle it was gently rolled towards its final destination using a specially designed seesaw trolley. It took the strength of six men to inch by inch elevate the stone to a perfect 90 degree angle facing toward the public entrance of the gardens.

The final stone in situ looks fantastic, it really sets a tone for our visitors before they enter the gardens. The incredible hand cut quote is taken from an old Kenyan proverb and reads,

'Treat the earth well as it was not given to you by your parents it was loaned to you by your children'
