George's Guide to Grass

The lawns at the Abbey House Gardens often draw gasps of admiration from our visitors throughout the season. With hardly a weed or bare patch in sight we often get asked the question 'just how do you do it ?'. The answer is usually a quick one, 'George!'

George Pratt has been part of the gardening team at Abbey House Gardens for over 7 years now and a professional green keeper for over 20 years. We thought it would be a useful tool to add the key activities George (and his young apprentice 'Mush') carries out on the lawns throughout the season and also how you might be able to do the same at home with your own garden tools.

Key Green Keeping tasks, in job order if your want to improve a lawn that has had not had any attention before:

1.  Spraying & Weeding - Extracting the main lawn weeds before further work. Common weeds inlcude moss, dandelions, clover etc
2. Scarification - Removing the dead and unhealthy grass (thatch)
3. Aeration - Loosening the hard trodden ground to enable healthy and lush grass growth
4. Mowing - Serious about getting a decent lawn? then mow, mow, mow to promote healthy strong growth
5. Spot repairs - For those well trodden areas like the path to the tool shed.
